Let the ooh, sweet doggie baby-talk commence!

This beautiful 12-year-old Golden Retriever has just moved in. She needed to find a new home quickly — and I thought about it for all of, oh, maybe a nano-second, when asked if I had room for a second dog.
Casey the Wonder Hound (my long-suffering greyhound), fortunately seems to agree that Cinder (that’s her name) is the kind of gentle, calm, refined lady-dog with whom he can share his domestic arrangements.
He’s still in charge of the squeaky ball — in fact, of any dog toy that sounds like prey in its final death throes — but she is allowed to wander about with a knotted rope or a Kong in her mouth, dropping it at people’s feet. Oh, and Cinder is also responsible for making sure that large amounts of white-gold fur are properly distributed all over the house; greyhounds aren’t famous for doing much shedding. And both dogs are sloppy eaters, but not inclined to guard their spilled food.
So, really, it’s all working out quite nicely.
Want to see another picture of what might very well be the world’s most attractive geriatric Golden Retriever? Sure, you do!

All together now — Awwww!

too cute! casey the wonder hound isn’t jealous of all the attention the new dog’s been getting? my good friend just brought a pug into the home, and ohhh boy, alien the original pug was not pleased at all…

So true, Candy, it can be just a bit *too* exciting when you bring another dog to join the family… Planning and management are key, believe me! It’s been over 9 months since there was a second dog sharing Casey’s home full-time, so I had to rack my brain a bit remember what to do, to keep things happy and calm, but they’re both such laidback dogs, it’s been really easy in this case.
Do you know Jeff Milman, the Chicago dog trainer? He’s got an audio on BlogTalk Radio that’s specially about multiple dog households that really helped, as well as a lot of the advice he’s really generous about giving away over at Watch and Train.com.

Congratulations! Cinder is the second mature golden I’ve come across this week. The first, Lucky by name, shares a home in Cape Breton with her owners and my darling older sister, Marie. If Cinder is anything like Lucky, you are truly blessed with a wonderful dog!

Thanks, Ken - I’ll bet that Lucky dog’s quite a charmer too!

She is beautiful. How is she adjusting to the change? Has her age been an issue in settling?

Anne, she never missed a beat. From being a kennel dog to being a pampered house pet — Cinder clearly thinks she’s “movin’ on up” and that’s okay by her! The only age-related thing is she can’t manage the stairs, so has to sleep down in the kitchen in her crate. But then, that’s still more comfy than she’s used to, so I try not to feel too bad!
Nancy, I know a Golden Retriever’s not a patch on your handsome little weiner dogs
but she is quite a beauty, isn’t she? I feel so lucky to have had the chance to adopt her, no matter that she’s such an old dog.
