Decoupage is a great way to decorate almost any object with paper cut-outs, and some gorgeous original effects can be made even by a complete beginner.
Similarly, collage and mixed media art projects are really taking off these days — could it be related to the popularity of scrapbooking and digital scrapbooking?
Here’s how to give your cut-paper project an extra-special touch, and also protect it from daily wear-and-tear:
- First, brush or spray a coat of clear varnish over the decoupaged surface, making sure that it’s dry and clean.
- When the clear coat is dry, brush on a light coat of a wood stain — try a light pine or oak colour for a realistic aging effect.
- Immediately dab it gently all over, using a clean lint-free cloth, to remove the excess stain and erase any coarse brush strokes.
- Allow the stain to dry, and apply a wax polish for a rich deep glowing finish.
This finishing technique can really enhance a collage with a nostalgic theme, or even save a disappointing decoupage project from being sanded down to do over. As a bonus, it helps to protect your work of art.
