DIY Sustainable Design - Wall Cans for Storage or Display

by domestika on February 11, 2007

Sustainable design may never have looked so frugal, so urban-hip and eco-friendly, and so very practical in daily use. Emiliano Godoy, one of Mexico’s hottest industrial designers, has created a wall-mounted storage system made from ordinary metal cans in an interesting asymmetrical arrangement.

I’ve made this design in many versions since 1997. The one on the pictures is composed of several (as many as needed) metal cans… glued together to form different shapes or clusters and can hold socks, underwear, fruit, keys, etc. It is, of course, not for sale — you can make your own easily.

The form is artistic, and the function is right there.

A change in the size of cans — from fat paint cans to tiny tomato-paste cans? — is all you need to adapt the storage unit to help organize your gear in any space, however small or strangely shaped. Paint the cans whatever colour suits your fancy. The silver is tres chic, but I’d also like to try one with a faux-tourmaline fantasy paint effect, just for the fun of it!
