rosa hugonis

by domestika on June 28, 2008

The first rose to bloom in my garden is Rosa xanthina f. hugonis, syn. ‘Father Hugo’s Rose’ — the golden rose of China, as it’s sometimes called. It has long arching canes that are loaded with pale yellow cups of single rose blossoms for one brief shining week each spring. It grows well on a gentle sunny slope at the edge of the driveway– Father Hugo’s rose doesn’t seem to need very rich soil at all, fortunately, so you can have a wider choice of planting locations in the garden. In a small garden it would be fun to grow this rose as an espalier style, trained flat and formal along a fence or wall.
