Hope your pup feels better soon, Pam! Dogs are such indiscriminate snackers - you're certainly wise to get her to the vet promptly, if she's bloated and straining to "go"!

That said, it may not have been those Greenies...

The original problem with Greenies that I wrote about here (back in 2005) was resolved when the company reformulated the treat (as in, they changed the ingredients) back in 2006. As I mentioned to Don, in the comment right above your own, the company FAQ http://www.greenies.com/en_ca/vets/FAQs/default.aspx?Product_ID=0 says they have not received any reports of blockages since 2006, when the change was made.

I know that we're all too busy to do more than skim an article online these days, so I've edited the headline here and put the UPDATE bit in bold, so as to make it very clear that Greenies are not a problem any more.

Hope your vet is able to track down the problem quickly, Pam, and that your little JR is feeling much better soon!

I just threw out 30.00 worth of Greenies and I will I would have seen this before buying them. I gave them to my Jack Russell and she bloated up and having a hard time with her BM's straining and not much coming out. I will be taking her to the vet and if it is from the Greenies I think they should have to pay for the vet bill.

Hi Don, it's my understanding that Greenies have since been reformulated - and the new forumula, apparently, will break down easier in the dog's stomach - so the original safety concern regarding Greenies is not a problem any more.

From the Greenies FAQ:

In 2006, Canine GREENIES® dental chews for dogs were reformulated to be more safe, soluble, and easily digestible, as well as effective for daily pet oral care. Reformulated GREENIES® dental chews are 96 percent digestible, which is more digestible than the average dry dog food. Since the product was reformulated in 2006, there have been no reports of blockages or obstructions.

I noticted that the comments are a few years old, do you know if the Greenies product (toothbrush) is still a danger of if the product has been changed to a safe item?

Thank You,

When looking for treats for our dog the first thing we do is read the ingredients. I do this for our entire family actually. The first ingredient is wheat gluten. Have you ever made a paper mache item with paper, water, and flour? What makes it sticky is the gluten in the flour. So the first ingredient in the dog treats makes things sticky. What do you think it sticks to when it is in the intestines of dogs? I put the treat back on the shelf and didn't read anymore. Gluten is a serious ingredient as many Americans are now finding out they are have a problem with gluten and can even cause serious damage. If it causes that much problems with humans I am not going to give it to my dog either.

Thank you for writing to share your experience with other dog-lovers: it must be very difficult for you, and I am so very sorry about your loss.

My case is one of those cited in the KIRO news story. I was an enthusiastic user of greenies until I gave one final treat to my dog and she died. As I see the danger here, one can use this product for a long period of time and then a piece of this stuff will either stick in the dog's organ The throat as in my case or the intestine which seems to be more common. You have got to wonder about the number of undiagnosed cases involving this product. In any case the only safe thing to do is not to use them...

Thanks! Like you, I like to search out as much factual information as possible - preferably from a firsthand source. I'm glad you found this post helpful.

There's still a good deal more to be learned: so if anyone has additional facts on the Greenies issue, a comment would be very welcome.

Great post - thank you. I've been searching online for something more than anecdotal horror stories on Greenies. The KIRO story has kicked up a bit of dust here in Seattle, reasonably so. Thanks for the insight.
