There’s something about tax time that inspires me to spiff up my home office. Maybe because it’s a lot more fun to browse for unusual pencil cups than it is to buckle down and put the pencil to work!

First up is the Plan B Pencil Cup ($40) designed by Adrian Olabuenaga. It’s a simple-but-devilishly clever construction of pencils in a circle, much more stylish than the old mug that holds my pens and pencils now.

Hey, a person could make one of these! Scrap of wood for the base, a drill press, some cut-off pencils… Or, just pick it up at the Museum of Modern Art store and use the time to dosomething else…

And while we’re shopping the museums online, there’s an elegant cloisonné pencil cup at the Smithsonian store ($25.99), all butterflies in glistening enamel jewel-tones. A matching stamp box is also available.

If you can’t come out in April with a nice rebate, you might as well feel special while you’re putting in the hours at the desk, no?
