If you think you’re lonely, try being an unmarried dairy farmer! It’s rough to find a date for Valentine’s Day with the scent of cow manure as your cologne.
But the members of one organic dairy co-op in Wales aren’t taking their single state lying down.
The Welsh milk producers have plastered their faces across thousands of milk cartons, set up a matchmaking website for the Fancy a Farmer campaign, and are getting a good flow of international interest from potential mates.
Calon Wen [a co-operative of 20 Welsh dairy farmers] was founded to support Welsh family farms, and as a few of its members and a significant proportion of Welsh farmers are single — Calon Wen decided to step in to support rural matchmaking, explains founding member Iwan Jones from Groes in Denbighshire.
“The Welsh countryside is a great place to live, with stunning secenery, but it can be hard place to find a date, as I’m finding out!” he says. “We want to encourage farmers to consider on-line dating as a fun way of meeting people and thought by getting involved we could make it less intimidating.”
Will any North American farmers follow suit, I wonder, with lonely-hearts ads springing up across supermarket shelves?
And in this world of big agri-business, could online dating be the (surprising) saviour of the endangered family farm?
