Mexican Tiles

by Domestik Goddess on February 6, 2007

Score! These gorgeous hand-painted tiles, a welcome gift from my friend Jeff who’s been teaching English in Mexico for the past year, were made by an artisan in Oaxaca. Now, what to do with them?

My kitchen is very much in this bright blue-and-yellow colour scheme, so some sort of backsplash comes to mind. Or I could set them into a table top. If I had only two or three, I’d be tempted to mount them as wall art.

But perhaps the kitchen isn’t the right room, although it (or a bathroom) might be the obvious places when we’re talking about decorative tiles like this…

Oh, I’ve just had a vision of these tiles arranged in an assymetrical pattern and framed with opaque-stained wood in a fairly neutral colour — perhaps a sage green or soft dark tone of terracotta — for a custom headboard on a bed!

Whichever room I decide will end up being graced by Mexican tiles, in the meantime I’m going to keep them spread out on a workroom bench and just enjoy seeing them whenever I walk by!
