Do I know duvets? Let me tell you, getting cosy under a big fluffy duvet is the only way to do bed in the dark of the Canadian winter! No fibrefill cheapies for me, either — just the pure feather-weight duvets filled with traditional duck (or goose) down.
It’s been my bedding for years and years…
But now the folks at Whispering Silks make a fine argument for duvets that are stuffed with silk fibres. They might very well be one notch above the conventional down and feather types we’ve known and cuddled under for years:
Silk filled duvets are half the weight of Down duvets which adds to your comfort. For allergy sufferers silk duvets are the best bedding selection. Silk is naturally 100% hypoallergenic. Some Down and Feather duvet manufacturers claim their products are hypoallergenic too and, they may be if they’ve undergone a rigorous chemical cleaning process to remove dust, pollen and other allergens naturally found on raw down and feathers.
Then there’s the whole shifting issue:
Whispering Silk duvets are made of silk filaments layered one on top of the other the entire length and width of the duvet. This layering eliminates shifting of the fill, so you don’t get the thin and cold spots when Down or Feather duvets shift. Baffle-box stitching doesn’t eliminate shifting of the fill.
So, what’s in your duvet?
Silkworm output, or the outerwear of ducks?

Hi Lise,
Sorry, I don’t sell silk duvets myself — I just appreciate them! And unfortunately, it seems that, in the year and a half since I wrote this post, the Whispering Silks website has disappeared. They were located in Guelph, Ontario (Canada), so you might want to try telephone directory assistance for that city to see if they’re still in business.
Also, if you can’t find them and you’re anywhere near Toronto, Bettenhaus on Bloor Street is another place to get silk duvets. Or, you can find Allergy-Shields silk duvets for a very reasonable price at Amazon.
Hope this helps!
p.s. I’ve snipped your phone number out of your comment, Lise, to help protect your privacy.
