Typically man-like, he claims to be pining for a Wake ‘n’ Bacon alarm clock.

Never mind a blaring buzzer in your sleepy ear, or even the questionably less-jarring sounds of morning radio, this wake-up call will cook your breakfast as it wafts you to wakefulness with the nose-tingling scent of bacon.

And for our vegetarian friends (or for dieters who try to limit the fat-laden temptations that begin the day), Jay Garrett has pointed out an Alfie Lake design that might fit the bill.

This concept for an alarm clock would let you pick which fragrance you’d like it to emit, and set a timer. Fall asleep to the sweet scent of lavendar, for example, and wake to home-baked bread. Sadly, it’s all cartridge-based; actual flowers and baked goods not included.

You’d think that the Museum of Modern Art’s online shop (MOMA) would be all tasteful leather desk accessories and reprints of Old Masters, right?

Not so!

Clockwise from top left:

Curved glasses in a rainbow of colours. Maybe not the best thing for your restorative orange juice on New Year’s Day morning, but a cheery sight in the winter kitchen.

The essential wall clock for peeking around corners at fridge-raiding roommates and mischievous children — the Spy Clock is a convex glass mirror with sleek metal hands that tell you how long you’ve been obsessing about what other people are doing in the house, instead of minding your own business.

How could a Color Spectrum umbrella not perk up a dreary wet day?

So, Broadway’s on strike, and you can’t afford a weekend in New York anyway, even if the shows are flowing? No worries — MUJI’s New York in a Bag has it covered, with all the important architecural icons made in miniature of sustainable wood.

And finally — my personal favourite — a cuddly Pig Finger Puppet that can double as a fridge magnet if you feel the need to pretend that you don’t really play with soft toys… (Six bucks for a flying pig! Who could resist?)

Yes, those clocks are one of a kind! That’s the beauty of handcrafted treasures that are magicked from mere trash…

Barak Barnoy’s stylish and eco-friendly wall clocks made of recycled aluminum come from Israel by way of the same fine folks whose African township-crafted recycled plastic bag roosters (you may remember) stole our hearts a few months back…

Wow! Imports buys only from the most ethical third world companies… because everyone deserves to be treated fairly, earn a livable wage and work reasonable hours, while working in a safe and pleasant environment.

Ron Askotzky, the artistic type who co-founded this family business with his brother Steve and wife Lisa, tells me they’re restocking even as we speak — and will be up to full inventory in the next two weeks, with lots more new fair-trade African beaded-wire animals and Christmas goodies.

Ron’s offering a 10% discount to Domestik Goddess readers throughout the Wow! Imports online store — and that’s in addition to free US shipping on purchases over $50.

Use coupon code DG10 to get 10% off your order.

Third world countries are plagued by high unemployment, poor education and diseases such as AIDS, so the crafters who produce our products benefit enormously from your patronage. You could send charity to a third world country, but providing someone with a job is even greater. As opposed to receiving a handout, having a job provides an individual with an invaluable sense of personal pride.

Anyone who has ever spent any time the City That Never Sleeps is almost certain to have fallen just a little bit in love in New York City. And that’s exactly why this clever clock caught my eye at Eco-Artware.com.

Artist Bio:
In 1991, cyclist Graham Bergh got a flat tire and used the flat inner tube to hang his stereo speakers. Intrigued with the notion of reviving discarded bicycle parts, he founded a company based on just that: creating functional products from recycled bike parts and other “rescued” materials.

These clocks are made from actual taxicab medallions issued in 1998-1999 — that is, the licenses that permit taxis to carry passengers in New York City. Each medallion is stamped with a unique license number and all show subtle signs of wear. Each clock comes with the battery included, and a hook for hanging as a wall clock, as well as a stand in case you’d rather display it on a desk or table top.

Souvenir of a love affair — plus, it’s waaaay cooler than those nasty little plastic light-up Statue of Liberty keychains, you know the ones…
