Good question, Anne...

When we were kids, every kind of insect was automatically "a bug" — but I'm sure the entomologists have a particular narrow definition of "bug" versus beetles and spiders and leafhoppers and whatnot...

Speaking of insects with a purpose — you should read StaceyR's post over at Are We There Yet? called Armed and Legged Guard Ensures Bountiful Harvest. It's all about how she hired a bunch of "mercenaries" to protect her tomatoes...
Fuhn-ny!

As for "Gary" — sounds like he has too much time on his hands, and should take up a hobby. Beekeeping, perhaps!

What an odd thing to email you about!

It does open up a line of thought, though. Are bees bugs? What is a bug? What is the difference between bees and bugs? Personally I would never call a bee a 'bug'. How rude. Bees have personality! They are a team united in purpose. Bugs? They are those rude little things that fly into your windscreen at night, aren't they? They are those odd black things that hang around the lights because they can't think of anything else to do!
