Lean ground beef was on sale this week, so lean ground beef will be on the family menu for the next few days. It’s pretty good value for nutrition, too 210 calories for 100g raw weight, according to the Health Check program of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, with 20g protein and a maximum of 17% fat. (Extra lean ground beef has 180 calories and 10% fat, even better, but it’s not what’s on sale this week!)
We’ll be having at least one meal from Bonnie Stern’s Heart Smart cookbook probably “Sweet and Sour Cabbage Casserole” to start with. It’s like cabbage rolls without all the bother of rolling up the rice-and-beef filling in cabbage leaves. Canned plum tomatoes and juice (cranberry or pineapple) provide the liquid for cooking. It’s one of our favourite comfort foods for a winter meal.
