Wilbur Woodpecker is so simple, and yet somehow just fascinating for children and adults alike.
How does it work? Truly, it is simple — just slide the wooden bird up to the top of the 18″ pole, and watch him peck his way back down.
Slide up, watch the bird…
Slide up, watch the bird…
Repeat as needed, until the magic of childhood steals back into the jaded adult soul…
My oldest uncle used to make these traditional children’s toys in his spare time (to work off the stress of his job as an air traffic controller, I suspect, looking back at it now), and didn’t we kids love to see what he’d bring out of his workshop next! It was just like having Santa Claus in the extended family!
This version of the old-fashioned woodpecker toy, lovingly handcrafted of cherry and birch hardwoods in Rhode Island, USA, is the work of Etsy vendor stumppondtoy — “86 years old and still kicking”!

I’ve never seen one of these before. Oddly enough today I was thinking of woodpeckers because I saw one out of my window. It was the first time I’ve ever seen one in person.
This reminded me of a woodpecker toy of my childhood. However, as I ponder on it, I think it was a woodpecker door knocker. We never put it on our door, but we children had a fun time with it. One would hold it and another pull the string to make it peck on the wood. Wonder whatever happened to it.
I’ve seen this in Malaysia too, and I think it’s a brilliant thing to keep kids occupied, LOL! Though I’ve never checked out the selling price :)
Don’t mind me, I’m just here to correct my link. And to watch the birds.
We’ve got one of those at home. They are addictive. Ours has three woodpeckers and we can watch them slide down the post time and again without getting bored
